"On Eco" proceeds in this playful spirit, introducing Eco's work in semiotics, outlining his theories of interpretation, and finally relating these ideas to his first two novels. There is good material here and if you are ok with a very informal approach then the book is fine. It's a long history, going back to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and John Quincy Adams, all early proponents of using decimals, initially applied to coinage. A young state trooper was certainly murdered that evening. The result is part autobiographical musing, part whodunnit, and large part criticism of the justice system and the prison apparatus that appears to have both enabled and condemned Renton. This chapter is written in his trademark elegance, so apparent in his own treatize on soft matter, titled Structured Fluids. I do wish it had finished a bit stronge
