This new practice-oriented workbook includes experiential learning exercises explicitly aligned to the practice behaviors recommended in the Council on Social Work Education's (CSWE) Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS). The workbook encourages students to begin developing their skills with social work practice behaviors through case-based exercises, short-answer ethical questions, critical-thinking questions, and role-play exercises in class or as activity assignments to be done outside of class. Each exercise is linked to specific practice behaviors, and each chapter is followed by an assessment rubric to be completed by the student, a peer evaluator, or the instructor to foster accountability.
Karen K. Kirst-Ashman is Professor Emerita and former chairperson in the Social Work Department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where she taught for 28 years. She has written six social work textbooks in multiple editions and numerous publications, articles, and reviews on social work and women's issues. She also has served on the Editorial Board of AFFILIA: Journal of Women and Social Work, and as a consulting editor for many social work journals including the Journal of Social Work Education. Dr. Kirst-Ashman has been a member on the Board of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and has served as a CSWE accreditation site visitor on various occasions. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Wisconsin. She has been the recipient of both the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Roseman Award for Excellence in Teaching and the University Outstanding Teaching Award. I discovered some awesome new-to-me authors that I'm tracking down for more of their works now. The book is full of compelling stories, I read it in a couple of sittings.
I guess what I loved most about it was the common sense, no nonsense way leadership is viewed. Some key takeaways: admittance is not just about grades; there is scholarship money to be found where you least expect it; there is such a thing as a “right fit”, but not a “perfect fit;” and most importantly, students can make difficult decisions without others doing it for them.. At the same time, you keep second guessing your own conclusions about the two women as Angie and Heather seem to discover things about themselves. Interestingly in a study of the historical-critical method where reductions are discouraged, there are a lot of summarizations.. Some of the names in the cases were ridiculous. The writing is a little cheesy, in my opinion, but you can always skip some of the dialogue.
