Even the evil character like Maya was so well-rounded, by the end, you don't know whether to hate her or feel sorry for her or even root for her! The pace was very quick and it had me turning pages well into the night, so even at 350 pages, it was a quick read.
The only reason this book got 3.5 stars instead of 4 was that it explicitly described the sex scenes which really made me uncomfortable and I had to skip a couple pages sometimes. But was the morale of New York a diseased condition, which PTSD language defined, or was it the painful but appropriate reaction to an entirely new kind of destructive event? Did the majority of New Yorkers require a psychotherapist to address their common experience? Or would their needs have been better served by other humanitarian interventions, such as by clergymen? Seeley suggests that many practitioners in her field accepted the "wartime walking wounded" mentality that played to the politics of the day, raising philosophical questions over t
